You know when someone’s peace comes from God because you can see joy in their eyes.
Recently I was video chatting with a dear friend and she told me I looked joyful. She said she knew I was happy because I was radiating joy. What was clearly meant as a compliment confused me.
Lately, I have been feeling like I am so very blessed, and I am, which makes me feel happy and joyful. But from other people’s perspectives, I was made to feel as though I don’t deserve that happiness or joy.
Isn’t that sad? How we let others’ perspectives of our lives make us feel like we aren’t worthy of our joy? Well friends, I am here to tell you that you are worthy of the joy and happiness you feel. Let me tell you why.
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the fullest.John 10:10
First of all, according to scripture, joy and happiness are not the same. We find happiness in wealth, relationships, travels, and so on. Those are worldly things, and worldly things don’t produce joy. Sure, they make us temporarily happy from time to time, but not real, everlasting joy. Those things aren’t soul satisfying, nor do they ever save us. At least not permanently…
Greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world.1 John 4:4
Happiness is a temporary, surface feeling. Joy is an eternal feeling that can only be discovered through Him.
Don’t get me wrong, trials, tribulations, and sorrows will still make themselves present in your life if you have a relationship with Jesus. But joy is a product of the hope we have in God. He can calm the sorrows and provide joy and peace.
I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.Romans 8:18
Joy also does not mean all smiles, all the time. You know when someone’s peace comes from God because you can see it in their eyes, not their smiles.
The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light.Matthew 6:22
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.Romans 15:13
