This post is inspired by Pantone Color Institute’s color of the year for 2023. Each year, a color is chosen with intention, and is used to predict trends and moods throughout the year.
For 2022, the color Very Peri (PANTONE 17-3938) was chosen for its futuristic appeal. For 2023, Pantone chose Viva Magenta (18-750);
This year’s Color of The Year is powerful and empowering. It is an animated red that revels in pure joy, encouraging experimentation and self-expression without restraint, an electrifying, and a boundless shade that is manifesting as a stand-out statement. PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta welcomes anyone and everyone with the same verve for life and rebellious spirit. It is a color that is audacious, full of wit and inclusive of all.

Inspired by the direction and focus the color of the year evokes, I decided to choose my own color of the year.
For background, I’m not a New Years resolution type, but for about three months, I’ve been focusing on creating motivation. About a month after I started my new job, I started Pilates. I finally had a schedule that supported a workout routine, but some days I found myself struggling with motivation.
Motivation is fluid, but discipline is where change is made. Committing to an action, creates discipline. Consistent discipline, develops habits.
So when I came across Jo Club’s Motivation Journal Prompt pack (how I came across Jo Franco is another story), I was inspired to create a better morning routine.
At the moment, my husband and I get up every morning and walk the dog before work. By the time we come home, I am ready for breakfast and coffee, and very rarely take the time to journal or get a workout in, and end up working out and showering quickly at lunch.
The journal prompts encouraged me to plan a morning routine pre-dog-walk. My plan is to get up 60-90 minutes earlier, before the dog and the husband, and spend time for myself. Workout, journal, and if there’s time to spare, read.
Where does the color of the year come in?
Well, I realized I didn’t have a journal, so I started looking on Amazon. But I couldn’t choose a color. I began referring to color psychology for my journal choice, and landed on brown (also a classic leather color…).

The words that caught my eye were security, isolation, comfort, and resilience.
Developing a morning routine that serves me will create a foundation for my day, while devoting time to accomplish mental and physical goals. Which will ultimately limit distractions and the feeling of, “today I should…”
Like Viva Magenta, I want my color choice to be a daily, symbolic reminder of what I am working on and the possibilities 2023 has in store.
